Random access memory (RAM) and read-only  memory (ROM) can be effortlessly confused because, as the names suggest, both are a kind of PC memory. In any case, there are some differences that set the two apart.

RAM refers to temporary memory that can be accessed and adjusted over and over again. RAM can be accessed to by any programs that want to store data temporarily as a feature of their activities. The more RAM a PC has, the all the more processing a CPU can manage without accessing the hard disk, making the PC much faster. The information stored on RAM is deleted once the program completes its assignment, or when the power to the computer is cut.

ROM is a permanent memory chip that can be read by a machine, however not written on. In contrast to RAM, the information stored on ROM is still there whether the PC has control or not. A simple example of ROM is the firmware your PC uses to boot up. You can't access or use that part of a PC's memory for whatever else. Another recognizable model is a CD-ROM. When it is copied, the information on the CD can't be modified.

To say it basically, the difference between RAM and ROM is that ROM is just composed once and from that point must be read, though RAM can be composed, read and overwritten over and over.
